When did the Brockville Museum open?

The Brockville Museum opened in June 1981 in what is known as “Beecher House”. An addition was constructed in 1995 to expand the exhibit, programming, and available collection storage space.

Why is it called “Beecher House”? And why is “Beecher House” significant?

Part of the Brockville Museum is located in a historic stone building known as “Beecher House”. It is named after the Loyalist settler, Isaac Beecher, who owned the property from 1824 until his death in 1870. Beecher was influential in the early political and industrial history of Brockville. The house is recognized as a fine example of vernacular Loyalist stone construction, common to this area during the early 19th Century. From 1897 until 1976 the house and surrounding property were owned by the Central Coal Company. The City of Brockville then purchased the house for use as a city museum. The Brockville Museum opened in Beecher House in 1981.
